Dodgers’ offense tamed as Giants take a split in season-opening series

first_img“I think you just have to give credit to those guys. They matched up really well,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “You’re seeing a different guy every time at bat and they made pitches.”The Giants didn’t have an extra-base hit. But they saved three of their nine singles for run-scoring situations, starting with Darin Ruf’s one-out RBI single in the third inning off Dodgers starter Julio Urias.Urias scraped his way through five fitful innings. He had runners on in every inning, walked three and needed 78 pitches to get through five innings. But he did hold the Giants to 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.“I really struggled with the first pitch,” Urias said through an interpreter. “Usually I try to attack fast. That’s part of my gameplan. But I wasn’t able to execute that. Later on, I was able to adjust and get out of the issues.”The Dodgers matched that in the third inning when Mookie Betts singled, stole second and scored on a Cody Bellinger single — a sequence that could be repeated many times in the future. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)ExpandLOS ANGELES — The Dodgers won’t have a playoff spot clinched by the end of next week after all — even with the expanded postseason field. After lopsided wins on the first two days of this delayed (and abbreviated) season, it looked like the Dodgers would run roughshod over the National League West. To that point, they had beaten the San Francisco Giants in six consecutive meetings (stretching back to last September) by a combined score of 42-4. Even with a close loss in Saturday’s game, the Dodgers had scored runs off 11 different Giants pitchers in the first three games of this season-opening series at empty Dodger Stadium. But Gabe Kapler kept playing a shell game with his starters and crowd-sourcing his relievers and came away with a split of the season-opening series with one of his former employers. The Giants used seven pitchers to tame the Dodgers lineup Sunday night, holding them to seven hits in a 3-1 win.The Dodgers lost on back-to-back days at home just five times all last season while going an NL-best 59-22 at home. But there wasn’t much more noise from the Dodgers’ offense in this one. Kapler picked through the “data points” to send six relievers to the mound, most sticking around only for the three-batter minimum.Side-armer Tyler Rogers was the only one to find any trouble. He survived a seventh inning that featured back-to-back singles by Justin Turner and Bellinger and a hit batter, loading the bases with two outs for Kike’ Hernandez.Despite having left-handed bats to choose from on the bench (Joc Pederson, Matt Beaty and Edwin Rios), Roberts chose not to pinch-hit for Hernandez, citing Rogers’ reverse splits — a .250 average against right-handed batters, .160 for left-handers albeit in a major-league career that encompasses all of 19 2/3 innings now.Hernandez bounced out to end the inning.“Actually, he’s very neutral, Rogers,” Roberts said. “They started that inning with (Rogers facing) Muncy, Turner and Bellinger. That obviously speaks to the fact that he’s pretty neutral. And that would be the third time Kike’ has seen him in four nights. … He got a hit off him the first time so I just went with the familiarity.“Obviously having Joc on the bench if it was a righty killer, or a guy that has a slider that really handles the right-handed hitter certainly it’s a conversation. … I think you have to dig a little deeper than what hand the guy throws with.”The game’s only extra-base hit — a leadoff double by A.J. Pollock — didn’t come until the bottom of the ninth but it did bring the tying run to the plate for the Dodgers three times. Trevor Gott retired Will Smith, Betts and Max Muncy to earn the save. The Giants, meanwhile, took the lead on a two-out RBI single by Mauricio Dubon in the sixth off lefty reliever Adam Kolarek and expanded it with another two-out single by Donovan Solano in the seventh off Pedro Baez.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Updated NASCAR schedule 2020: Everything to know about Cup Series races as season resumes

Four of the last six regular-season races will be part of doubleheaders at Michigan and Dover.Below is what we know about the current state of the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.NASCAR schedule 2020NASCAR on July 8 released the third edition of its revised Cup Series schedule for 2020. The latest update confirmed the last six regular-season races before the start of the Cup Series playoffs in September.Below is NASCAR’s schedule for the rest of 2020, starting with the Darlington races it ran in its return in May.DateTrackTV channelStart timeSun., May 17DarlingtonFOX3:30 p.m. ETWed., May 20DarlingtonFS17:30 p.m. ETSun., May 24CharlotteFOX6 p.m. ETWed., May 27CharlotteFS18 p.m. ETSun, May 31BristolFS13:30 p.m. ETSun, June 7AtlantaFOX3 p.m. ETWed, June 10MartinsvilleFS17 p.m. ETSun, June 14Homestead-MiamiFOX3:30 p.m. ETSun, June 21TalladegaFOX3 p.m. ETSat., June 27PoconoFOX3:30 p.m. ETSun., June 28PoconoFS14 p.m. ETSun., July 5IndianapolisNBC4 p.m. ETSun., July 12KentuckyFS12:30 p.m. ETWed., July 15Bristol (All-Star Race)FS18:30 p.m. ETSun., July 19TexasNBCSN3 p.m. ETThurs., July 23KansasNBCSN7:30 p.m. ETSun., Aug. 2New HampshireNBCSN3 p.m. ETSat., Aug. 8MichiganNBCSN4 p.m. ETSun., Aug. 9MichiganNBCSN4:30 p.m. ETSun., Aug. 16Daytona (road course)NBC3 p.m. ETSat., Aug. 22DoverNBCSN4 p.m. ETSun. The Charlotte race on May 27 ran instead of the Sonoma race that was originally scheduled for June 14.The Pocono doubleheader remained as previously scheduled for the final weekend of June, with the Cup Series racing on back-to-back days. Those races were presented on Fox (and FS1) rather than on NBC. Fox closed its coverage this season with the All-Star Race at Bristol on July 15 before NBC took over, but NBC still carried the Brickyard 400 on July 5.The previously postponed races at Dover and Michigan are now part of Saturday-Sunday doubleheaders at those respective tracks in August.Because New York requires people to quarantine for 14 days after traveling from one of the states impacted heavily by COVID-19 (including North Carolina), the Watkins Glen race on Aug. 16 was moved to the Daytona road course. According to The Athletic, NASCAR tried to get a quarantine waiver for its Watkins Glen races but was denied by Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office. Entering the season, we knew the 2020 NASCAR schedule would feature significant changes in terms of which tracks would host races on which dates. Yet nobody could have predicted the amount of change the 2020 NASCAR schedule has actually endured. After shifting some dates and moving certain races to different tracks, NASCAR still has a complete slate of 36 races intact for 2020. Four Cup races were completed before the outbreak reached the United States, and NASCAR became the first American sports league to resume its season — albeit without fans in attendance — starting with a previously unscheduled race at Darlington Raceway on Sunday, May 17.last_img read more

8000 housing units to be made available through PPP initiative – CH&PA

first_imgThe Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) on Thursday launched its Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative with the aim of delivering over 8000 units to low and moderate-income earners as part of its housing solutions in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) by 2021.Chief Executive Officer Lelon Saul said the PPP model was aimed at addressing the shortfall in housing units on the supply side, particularly for low to moderate-income families. He noted that the current rate of delivery was woefully inadequate, adding that there was an urgent need to address the issue of affordability and access to mortgage financing.“Housing continues to be a mirage for large proportion of ordinary Guyanese despite ongoing initiatives. The current rate of delivery is woefully inadequate. Undoubtedly, there is an urgent need to address the issue of affordability and access to mortgage financing. Current data shows that there is a strong preference for built units and we recognise at the current rate of production we will not be able to address the demand in a timely manner, thus birthed the Public-Private Partnership model,” Saul said.Saul noted that home ownership would no longer be an elusive dream, highlighting that there were many low to medium-income individuals who were allocated house lots and were yet to commence building.“Several factors are contributing to this undesirable state. Apart from access to mortgage financing, slothful pace of infrastructural development and low confidence in building contractors are also contributing factors. The Public-Private Partnership model is not touted as the panacea, but in a great way, it will benefit our citizens. Our citizens will benefit from lower cost units, units that are durable, built to international standards, and are constructed in record time,” he noted.Meanwhile, Minister within the Communities Ministry, Valerie Adams-Yearwood said the Government has embarked on an ambitious plan to provide housing for low-income earners, State employees and young people within the price range of $4 to $10 million. She further stated that the PPP initiative provided an avenue for the partners and others to become viable partners to contribute to the development of Guyana.“We carried out a survey and [in] that survey we learnt that more than 9000 have a preference for various types of housing units rather than the house lots and I envisage that the Public-Private Partnership will help us to respond to that demand,” Adams-Yearwood said.CH&PA Project Manager Omar Narine while providing an overview of the project said in 2016 they conducted market research for potential contractors, consortiums, and financiers to execute infrastructural developmental works, construction of social facilities, and construction of building units. He noted that following the publishing of an Expression of Interest, they received more than 20 proposals and they would have successfully evaluated seven of those. Narine explained the seven companies have already submitted their design layouts which are being evaluated.“They (design layouts) are with the Planning Department and they are being reviewed and in the next two to three weeks, we are expected to close that process and head to the next phase of this initiative. The critical information was provided to the private partners,” Narine said.“The next step is after the design layouts we would be reviewing financial proposals and the different housing options presented by you the partners…after that is the selection of the contract and the best suited one will be selected based on the negotiations at that stage,” he added. The shortlisted companies are Reno Vess, Namalco, Mohamed Ramit and Sons, Green Heart Tree Energy, Eco Energy, FTM, and China Dillian.
