Amtrak signs Illinois contract

first_imgAN AGREEMENT securing Amtrak’s continued operation of three Chicago ’corridor’ services was announced on January 14. Illinois Department of Transportation had been threatening to invite open tenders for the State House to St Louis, Illini to Carbondale and Illinois Zephyr to Quincy, in an effort to lower the state’s subsidy payments.Amtrak said that it had been extremely aggressive in its efforts to retain the franchise and has made a number of concessions to win what it called ’an innovative, multi-year package’. Subject to annual appropriations from the state legislature, Illinois will pay US$7m in 1997-98, US$7·55m in 1998-99 and US$7·95m in 1999-2000, with Amtrak bearing the risk of any losses. The operator has promised to enhance service levels, improve productivity and develop a pricing structure affordable to Illinois and other states wishing to support services.Amtrak will operate the six return trips under parameters outlined by Illinois DOT including timings, scheduling and minimum seating capacity on each train. Food service must also be provided. Penalties will be payable if a train departs from an originating point more than 30min late or if departures from points of origin are less than 99% on time annually.last_img read more

GAA NEWS: MILFORD REACH GAELTACHT SEMI-FINALS WITH WIN OVER TERMON

first_img*Comortas Peile na Gaeltacta*CLG BnaG 3-12 Termon 1-15 (AET)Na Galloglaigh advanced to the Semi Finals of the Gaeltacht on Saturday after a hard fought victory over Termon. It needed extra time to divide the teams in what was an end to end battle of a game. The majority of the first half was a tight affair with a lot of tit for tat scoring until with 5 minutes remaining Cathal Mc Gettigan got on the end of a great pass from Pauric Curley to finish beneath the keeper. This left 4 between the sides at the break although Na Galloglaigh also lost Enda McHugh after 20 minutes to a suspected dislocated shoulder, all at the club wish Enda a speedy recovery. In the second half Termon came out all guns blazing to put Na Galloglaigh under severe pressure and wiped out the 4 point lead. Once again the second half proved to be an end to end battle with both sides weathering storms and bouncing back. However in the last 5 minutes of normal time Na Galloglaigh had numerous chances to kill the game off but didn’t take them, and instead the game went to the drama of extra time. Extra time proved to be a game of two halves with Na Galloglaigh well on top in the first and Termon in the second. However two goals from Adam Serrinha and Cathal McGettigan in the space of minute in the first half gave Na Galloglaigh the cushion to defend and they showed great composure to see out the victory in the end. This put the boys through to their first ever Gaeltacht Semi Final in Glenties on the May Bank Holiday weekend where they will take on Ardara.Team: Sean Gallagher, Brandon Toye, Barry McNulty, Conor McNulty, Enda McHugh, Paddy Peoples, TJ Evesson, Sean Black, Anthony Fisher, Darragh Black, Christopher Barrett (0-2), Jonny Logue, Cathal McGettigan (2-6), Pauric Curley, David Curley (0-1).
