Westport Winery Adds Orchard Golf to their Destination Winery Activities

first_imgSubmitted by Westport WineryWestport Winery, known for its innovation as a destination winery, has added golf to its list of free amenities. Winery co-owner, Kim Roberts, calls it “mowing with a purpose.” The nine-hole pitch and putt course is situated within one of Vineyard By-the-Sea’s three orchards. “We have over twenty acres of vineyards, orchards and berries that we farm,” her husband Blain said. “All of these crops demand a maintenance regime that allows them to flourish without undo competition from grasses and weeds, so our team spends a lot of time mowing throughout the summer. Designing the opportunity for our guests to play golf within these crops made sense.”The idea itself came from Kim Roberts’ sister and brother-in-law, Jill and Stan Schwartz. “My sister and her husband have a wheat farm and cattle ranch in Eastern Washington. A number of years ago they created an event center at their place. They had been manicuring one grazing field for what’s called pasture golf. It turned out to be a really fun and popular part of their agricultural destination.”Since the Roberts are not currently raising livestock on their farm, other than chickens and pigs, they will adjust the name of their playing field from pasture golf to orchard golf. Blain Roberts said, “It’s a nine-hole orchard-golf course. There are no long fairways or putting greens. Play is limited to a 9-iron or chipping wedge. And it’s free to play. We just want to have a place that is fun for all ages, all year.”In September, Westport announced the creation of their own brand of cider. Blain said, “Since 2008 we’ve been Westport Winery and Vineyards By-the-Sea. The second half of our name is finally creating a stronger presence as our daughter Carrie starts producing By-the-Sea Cider in addition to her responsibilities as our general manager.”Kim Roberts, a former architect and honorary master gardener, designed the course herself which she said posed several interesting challenges. “The design was formed around our existing Shinseiki and Chojuro Asian pears and Jonathan apple trees. They are an integral part of our new cidery, so they are sacred to our agricultural mission. We also have some springs on our farm that create perfect water hazards. Plus we have a nursery so we’re eager to show our guests new design applications of favorite plants. And finally, with our incredibly talented local artists we have created an outdoor sculpture garden. By moving some fences for this orchard golf course we open up great opportunities for our guests to explore and enjoy more of our farm.”The couple’s son, Dana, is the director of winemaking for the family. Part of this job description is managing the vineyards where they grow Pinot Noir and Muscat of Norway. This integration of agriculture and entertainment is not new to him as one of his vineyards is also a grape maze. He said, “We encourage our guests to explore our farm with lots of educational signage and unique experiential learning opportunities. Greater knowledge about what it takes to create food for our country is an important part of preserving the family farm tradition.” Facebook3Tweet0Pin0 Westport Winery, the 2013 Best in the Northwest Destination Winery and 2011 Washington Winery to Watch, is located on the corner of Highway 105 and South Arbor Road halfway between Westport and Aberdeen. Latest: Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1

first_imgGary Cahill hauled the visitors level at Anfield after Emre Can’s effort had deflected in off the Chelsea defender to give Liverpool an early lead. Can tried his luck from long range and the German’s shot looped into the net after striking Cahill’s shoulder, giving wrong-footed keeper Thibaut Courtois no chance. Can had gone close with another deflected shot in the opening minute, when the ball flashed just wide after hitting John Terry.Chelsea responded strongly to going behind and equalised with the help of goal-line technology – ironically in front of the Kop, where Luis Garcia’s infamous 2005 Champions League semi-final goal against them was allowed to stand after being adjudged to have crossed the line.Cesc Fabregas’ corner was flicked on by Diego Costa and after Simon Mignolet superbly saved Terry’s header, Cahill did enough to score despite the keeper’s best efforts on the line.Cahill was soon at the centre of the action again, blocking Raheem Sterling’s shot with his shoulder as the home fans appealed in vain for a penalty.Ramires was included the Chelsea side, while Liverpool recalled Steven Gerrard, Sterling, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Mario Balotelli to their starting line-up.Back after recovering from a recent injury, Ramires returned along with Cesar Azpilicueta, who is available again after a suspension.Willian and Filipe Luis are on the Blues bench, as are Didier Drogba and the fit-again Loic Remy. Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Gerrard, Can, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Balotelli. Subs: Jones, Toure, Lucas, Allen, Lallana, Borini, Lambert. RailsBridge: Encouraging Women to Program with Free Ruby on Rails Workshops

Tags:#hack#Services audrey watters 7 Types of Video that will Make a Massive Impac…center_img The RailsBridge Open Workshop project, which teaches web app development to programmers and non-programmers, has announced its 2011 schedule that’ll include eight more of its popular free workshops for women.RailsBridge’s workshops take place on a Friday evening and full-day Saturday, during which time participants learn how to develop a web app using the Ruby on Rails framework. Over the past year-and-a-half, the project has trained almost 600 people, nearly 500 of them women. RailsBridge hopes to expand further this year, with workshops in San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago. These workshops aren’t women-only. Nonetheless, the outreach has been aimed at women, in order to help foster more gender diversity in the Rails community. Those efforts have been pretty successful, “moving the needle” as project co-founder Sarah Mei puts it, from 2% of the San Francisco Ruby on Rails community in January of 2009 to 18% in January 2010.Mei says that she was initially concerned it might be difficult to convince women to participate in the workshops. “However, we soon learned that demand is not a problem.” The first workshop the project offered filled up with a waiting list in less than 24 hours. And the first event this year, February 4 and 5 at Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, is full too. (There are still 7 workshops open for registration, but sign up or volunteer soon!)“The workshop project is a key part of the ecosystem that we are working to develop in open source, making it truly open to programmers and non-programmers of any background,” says RailsBridge’s president Sarah Allen. The mission of RailsBridge, says Allen, is to bridge the gap from aspiring developer to contributing open source community member through mentoring, teaching and writing.Moving the Needle: How SF Ruby Got to 18% Related Posts Growing Phone Scams: 5 Tips To Avoidlast_img read more

He has been here for six years – before and after Cardiff – and is very stable, very loyal and, just like at Manchester United, he is a former player so he knows the club very well and knows the DNA of the club.“He is a very positive guy. He is very easy to like and has a clear vision of how to play football but also works well with individual players.“There is no doubt in my mind that he will do well at Manchester United. He is a club legend there and that immediately means he will get respect from the players and the fans.“I don’t know well enough what’s happened inside Manchester United to comment and I will be careful on what I say on that.“But what I do know is that it’s important that he knows the history of the club and knows Manchester United’s past and what makes them successful.“It’s new times for the players but I know they will like him personally, they will enjoy working with him and it will be a big challenge to get some good results.“Of course it’s a surprise but not so much when you remember he’s got such history with the club, understands the club and he is also such a nice guy.
