Starbucks UK will be looking to tackle youth unemployment by creating 5,000 new jobs in the next five years throughout the UK.The move will help to support the global coffee company’s plans to develop and expand its new drive-thru concept, for which it currently has nine outlets nationwide, with the first having opened in Cardiff in 2008. The new roles to be created over the next five years will support Starbuck UK’s aim to open up 200 drive-thru outlets during the same period of time.Kris Engskov, managing director of Starbucks UK and Ireland, said: “Customers told us that they now expect the best possible coffee wherever they are and the success of our first drive-thru stores shows that this is a huge opportunity. It also means that we are able to create quality jobs at a time when they are most needed and because half of our baristas are under 24 years old, this will particularly benefit young job-seekers at a time of record youth unemployment.”Around half of the drive-thrus will be operated under licence by petrol forecourt retailer Euro Garages, with many of these stores to be located in the Midlands and the north of England.Zuber Issa, managing director of Euro Garages, said: “Our relationship with Starbucks has been a huge success to date. We’re delighted to be making such a positive announcement about our expansion together that will create new and exciting employment opportunities for so many people across our sites.”Starbucks has found many new places to sell its coffee, including on trains and planes as well as in supermarkets and workplaces. In 2010, Starbucks opened 35 motorway stores with Welcome Break, serving seven million cups in the first year of operation. The company has more than 700 stores in the UK, contributing to consistent sales growth during the last two years.
Israel’s coalition deal between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz breaks a year-long deadlock but has pitfalls — from power sharing mechanisms to West Bank policy and the premier’s corruption charges.Monday’s agreement for a unity government, signed by Netanyahu and parliament speaker Gantz after three inconclusive elections in less than a year, seeks to give the Jewish state desperately-needed political stability as it confronts the coronavirus pandemic. “After a year and a half of political stalemate and as the country endures one of the most severe economic crises in its history, it is high-time for Israel to have a functioning government,” said Yohanan Plesner, president of the Israel Democracy Institute think-tank. Implementing the deal will require majority support in Israel’s 120-seat parliament, the Knesset. That is likely to happen, assuming it is backed by Netanyahu’s unified right-wing bloc and most of Gantz’s supporters. Netanyahu will serve as prime minister through the first 18 months of the three-year deal. Gantz will first serve as “alternate prime minister,” a new position that must be created through an amendment of Israel’s so-called Basic Laws. Passing that amendment is a key part of the coalition deal. After 18 months, Gantz takes over as prime minister, with Netanyahu serving as his alternate. Through the first six months, the government will be defined as an “emergency” body focused primarily on containing the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigating the economic devastation it has caused. Israel has more than 13,800 confirmed virus cases, including over 180 deaths, and a nationwide lockdown has left huge numbers of people without an income.Cabinet portfolios are split between the two camps. Key ministries assigned to Netanyahu’s side include finance and interior, while Gantz’s side will control the justice ministry and the position of foreign minister will rotate. The former army chief announced Tuesday evening he would serve as defense minister. Ministers can only be fired if there is agreement from both sides, and the prime minister cannot sack his alternate. Power sharing Topics : Netanyahu’s trial The prime minister was due to face trial on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust last month. The trial’s start date was postponed to May 24 because of the pandemic. Under Israeli law, a prime minister can continue to serve while under indictment, but a regular cabinet minister cannot. With his trial, including possible appeals, expected to last several years, the veteran premier did not want to be forced out of government when his term expired. His expected transition to alternate prime minister in 2021 likely solves that problem. Netanyahu’s Likud party also retained significant say over the appointment of judges and prosecutors, influence that could help the prime minister as his case moves forward. Legal cases have also been filed by non-government groups seeking to block an individual under indictment from serving as prime minister. Under the coalition deal, if Israel’s top court bars Netanyahu from serving, his agreement with Gantz is dissolved and another election will be called. West Bank annexationsFor Netanyahu, US President Donald Trump’s plan for Middle East peace offered Israel an “historic” opportunity. The plan — rejected by the Palestinians and condemned by much of the international community — gave Israel the green light to annex Jewish settlements and other strategic territory in the occupied West Bank. Such annexations would violate international law and likely inflame tensions in the volatile region. Gantz had praised Trump’s controversial plan but was more cautious regarding its implementation. The coalition agreement says that any measures regarding Trump’s plan would be executed “in full agreement of the United States,” while maintaining “international dialogue” and “the need to maintain regional stability”.At the same time, with Gantz’s permission, Netanyahu can bring Trump’s annexation plan to cabinet and parliament for discussion and approval from July 1.Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh on Monday condemned the formation of an “Israeli annexation government,” saying it marked the end of the two-state solution. But he warned that the Netanyahu-Gantz deal risks creating a government “without a grand vision or clear goals” that would be vulnerable to being bogged down with “cumbersome political agreements.”Here are the main points of the deal:
South Florida hospitals and long-term-care facilities this week will begin to receive coronavirus tests that will provide results in just five to 13 minutes. The tests, which health officials are referring to as a “game-changer,” will be available at some hospitals in our region on Monday. As more of the tests are made, they should also become available at drive-thru testing sites.Cleveland Clinic Florida, Memorial Healthcare and Broward Health are among the South Florida hospital systems to have the tests already.“Those tests will be prioritized to caregivers, to inpatients and to nursing home patients to ensure they are virus-free before they go back to a nursing home,” says Cleveland Clinic CEO Wael Barsoum.Meanwhile, Cleveland Clinic will continue to conduct traditional testing at its four drive-thru sites, where it will still take an average of two or three days to get results. The hospitals bought the tests directly from Abbott Laboratories, a global health care manufacturer. On Friday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he has asked that some of the rapid tests Abbot is producing also be sold to nursing homes and adult living facilities throughout the state.“They could be used on staff and at least to do some spot checks of residents to see if this virus is penetrating any of their facilities,” DeSantis said. “Many of you know there is a crush on medical supplies and these tests are in demand. We will get whatever we can get for the state. We are working to see if some of those can be applied in a way that can directly protect senior citizens.”Abbott says it is producing 50,000 tests a day and will them ship daily to more customers in more places, with plans to increase manufacturing to eventually produce 2 million tests a month by June.In addition, Baptist Health South Florida has has developed a test in house to get results in 24 hours. “Rapid turnaround time for testing is particularly important with cancer patients,” said Dr. Guenther Koehne, deputy director at Baptist Health’s Miami Cancer Institute.
The England Golf Partnership (EGP) has today welcomed a £13 million grant from Sport England to continue to develop the sport over the four years from 2013-17. The grant is an increase on the £12.5 million core funding award for the current period and will support programmes to encourage more people to start and stay in golf and to nurture talented players. Roger Moreland, the EGP’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We are very pleased with this level of financial support from Sport England and look forward to working with them to maximise their investment and to build on our successes of the past four years.” The grant is part an investment of almost half a billion pounds in grassroots sport, announced today by Sport England. It is intended to keep the inspiration of London 2012 alive and help fulfil Lord Coe’s pledge that the Games would get more people playing sport, a feat that no other host nation has ever managed to achieve. Sport England’s Director of Sport, Phil Smith commented on the grant for golf: “This investment reflects the progress the EGP has made in getting more people playing golf and developing talent within the sport. “Whilst there are challenges in keeping people playing golf in the current economic climate, we are confident that the EGP will continue to demonstrate leadership and innovation within the sport to ensure the number of people playing grows.” The 2013-17 Whole Sport Plan for golf, which will be rolled out from April, includes plans to encourage more people with a disability to take up golf and focuses on providing opportunities for people older than 26 to take up the game and play more often. In addition, the plan contains proposals for increasing the number of young people aged 14-25 playing the game. Roger Moreland added: “There are many challenges in golf, not least those of the weather and of the economic climate, but we are excited about the prospects for the coming four years, which will include the return of golf to the Olympic movement. “This award is a vote of confidence in our achievements to date and we will continue to work to make golf welcoming, accessible and a sport that offers fun and value to those who want to play.” The current four-year plan has shaped a successful period for golf development, during which a network of County Golf Partnerships became established and created a significant increase in golf participation. Their activities, to direct new and returning golfers to structured PGA coaching and playing opportunities, are enhanced by working with pro-active, affordable and accessible golf centres and by a better understanding of the requirements of golfers and would-be players. In the last year a pilot marketing campaign, Get into Golf, has promoted activity with one clear message. Since the current plan began in April 2009, over 154,000 people have tried golf at taster and coaching sessions, of whom more than 85,000 were aged over 16. To date, 4200 new memberships have been reported as being created as a direct result of their activity. These numbers have accelerated as the CGPs have become more customer-focussed. The latest CGP Impact Report shows that in the year to the end of September 2012, over 70,000 people tried golf – almost double the number in the in 2011. In the same period the number of adults playing golf regularly as a result of being involved in CGP activity increased by eight per cent. Meanwhile, England Golf’s 2012 golf club membership questionnaire has revealed that, although golf club membership dropped overall, 25 per cent of clubs have experienced an increase in membership in the last two years. These clubs are being examined in detail to establish how they are achieving success. The EGP brings together the amateur governing body, England Golf, and the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) to grow the game with the support of the Golf Foundation and Sport England. 17 Dec 2012 EGP welcomes £13m award from Sport England
TRAINER QUOTES JOCKEY QUOTES KENDRICK CARMOUCHE, SCUBA, WINNER: “We broke a step slow today. I just wanted to get him into the race and let him get into stride and in position. When I knew it was time to go, we took command and I knew I had a lot of horse and we accelerated with an eighth of a mile to go. I just pretty much rode him out from there. He’s a really good horse. I thank Mr. Ross and Brendan Walsh for the opportunity. They have a niche for the distance races. I am just so pleased that Mr. Ross has stuck with me for the past 10 years of my career. I was at Santa Anita one other time about seven years ago, but I never made it to the horse shoe. I have two more races to ride tomorrow. BRENDAN WALSH, SCUBA, WINNER: “I think the pace was favorable. The horse was keen enough to go on and get on with it and they left him alone to an extent. It worked out great. He’s just a great horse. He’s won three times in a row in three states in the best of company. He’s just remarkable.” NOTES: Walsh is 42, from Cork, Ireland, and this is his fifth year training. He won the Marathon two years ago with Cary Street. The winning owner, DARRS, Inc., lists its residence as Vienna, Va.

And, that’s exactly what Rebecca Brachman shares with us in this Tedx on her news of a “serendipitous breakthrough treatment that may prevent mental disorders like Depression and PTSD”.Have you ever wondered how Antidepressants were initially discovered? Would you believe that they were happened upon by accident when creating drugs to suppress allergies and treat Tuberculosis?Brachman shares the science behind the discovery of Antidepressants and their nearly 30-year focus on Seratonin, while also suggesting that it may be time to look in a different direction when it comes to Mood Disorders.“We are in the middle of an epidemic of mood disorders like Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. One in four of all adults in the United State suffers from mental illness… Depression has now actually surpassed HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Diabetes and war as the leading cause of disability worldwide. And, also, like Tuberculosis in the 1950s, we don’t know what causes it. Once it’s developed, it’s chronic, lasts a lifetime, and there are no known cures.”
