A man named Temech has risen from the pages of the Bible. The Jerusalem Post reported that his clay seal was found in a dig south of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem by archaeologist Eilat Mazar, who earlier found a portion of a wall from the same Nehemiah period (11/30/2007). The article shows a picture of the seal. This adds to the growing list of Bible characters found in archaeological digs (e.g., 07/11/2007). Temech (or Temah) is mentioned in Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7 as one of the returnees from Babylonian exile. His seal may have been purchased in Babylon and brought to Jerusalem. The date of the seal is 538 to 445 BC and is significant for identifying a temple servant from the First Temple period. The blog at Bible Places also mentions the discovery.Update 02/02/2008: Bible Places Blog mentions that “Temah” is probably an incorrect translation. Instead, the name may be that of another Bible character of the same period: Sophit, daughter of Zerubbabel (1 Chronicles 3:19).The seal seems to indicate a degree of syncretism with Babylonian religious imagery. This should not be surprising. “The fact that this cultic scene relates to the Babylonian chief god seemed not to have disturbed the Jews who used it on their own seal,” the article states as Mazar’s opinion. We know from the books of Ezra and Nehemiah that the people needed repeated reprimands to purge their lifestyles of pagan influences. Some returnees were more committed than others. Popular idols are hard to exorcise. Undoubtedly a future historian would wonder about the mixed messages in artifacts found among the remains of a typical 2008 church. What icons of idolatry might be found among your own artifacts? Would pins or rings with emblems of pop stars, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and other non-Christian iconic images make a future archaeologist wonder how to interpret the find? Would an icon of Darwin be the modern equivalent of the Babylonian god Sin?(Visited 10 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0
3 March 2014President Jacob Zuma has called on young South Africans to dream big and to help the country move towards meaningful economic emancipation, saying that youth development and empowerment was “critical to the success of our democracy”.“You must dream about a prosperous South Africa; we dreamt about freedom and it happened,” Zuma said in his address to the Presidential Youth Indaba on Jobs and Skills in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg on Sunday.Zuma said the government was investing heavily in education and skills development, which were key to enabling young peopleto run the country’s economy.“To date over 8 000 youth have been assisted to rewrite their matric,” he said. “The results in 2013 were an impressive 78% pass rate.“At the level of higher education, 12% of our population now hold a postgraduate qualification, up from 7% in 1996. Student enrolments at colleges have increased by 90%. There are increases in enrolments at universities and universities of technology as well.Zuma said South Africa had to build an inclusive economy that created jobs, but importantly also one that reflected the demographics of the country. He said the ownership, control and management of the economy had to be changed, working with business, labour and the community sector. While ownership of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange had changed only slightly since 1994, Zuma welcomed the fact that over R600-billion in black economic empowerment transactions had been recorded since 1995, while the percentage of black people and women in senior management had increased from less than 10% in the 1990s to over 40% today.National Development PlanZuma asked the young conference delegates to start thinking about their contribution to growing an inclusive economy and to moving the country forward, and to familiarise themselves with the government’s long-term strategy for job creation and poverty reduction, the National Development Plan (NDP),“Within the NDP are some instruments that we want you to know and understand very well as young people,” he said. The President noted that the youth had pointed out issues of concern, such as work experience and finding the first funding to become an entrepreneur, adding that he was pleased that the heads of funding agencies like the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) were in attendance at the Indaba. In the past year, the Industrial Development Cooperation (IDC) and Sefa had approved funding of more than R160-million for young entrepreneurs.Zuma also noted that the government’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) had created 3.7-million work opportunities between April 2009 and September 2013, while 277 out of the country’s 278 municipalities had signed protocol agreements committing them to achieving their EPWP targets. The EPWP targets women and the youth, with 54% women and 50% youth making up the participants in the programme.Source: SAnews.gov.za

Looking for more information on sliders? Check out this DSLR Slider Guide. VFX PlatesThe precision movement of a motorized slider creates opportunities for several types of VFX shots that require accurate, motion-controlled movement. As a lone operator, you may not be doing extensive VFX work, but it’s certainly helpful for VFX in passion projects. For example, if you’re shooting a short film that requires the same actor to play two different characters, perhaps twins, it’s common to set up the shot twice and position the actor standing apart from their opposite — and splice the two together in post-production. But with a motorized slider, you could track forward or backward and really sell the “clone” effect. This would be impossible with a regular slider because the movement has to be the same in both shots. And of course, let’s not forget, you can also capture amazing time lapses. Motorized sliders can make you more efficient on location, and they add production value to your work with a full-crew look.Cover image via Shutterstock. If you’re a lone wolf operator, ultimately, you want equipment that will make up for missing crew members, without weighing you down. It was only this year that I got my first motion-controlled slider, and I keep asking myself why I waited so long?First and foremost, we have to acknowledge that a motorized slider is going to add weight to your kit. I can fit my GlideTrack into a meter-long bag. My Syrup motorized slider requires a much larger bag and is twice as heavy. This is where many lone operators lose interest. Many have become accustomed to equipment that has steadily gotten lighter, smaller, and cheaper over the years. As a result, most of us don’t want to add extra gear, but in the case of a motorized slider, it’s worth it. Here are a few reasons why.Image via KesslerCrane.Secondary Camera Footage4K has given many videographers the ability to “fake” a B-cam. You can shoot in 4k resolution and later crop it in post-production to make it appear as if you have another camera closer to an interviewee. But nothing sells production value like moving footage. With a motorized slider, you now have a second camera operator. For wedding videos, documentaries, artesian videos, and even interviews, a moving shot cut with your primary mid shot can really take your production value to the next level. For a sole operator, producing footage that looks as if it has come from a small team is invaluable. A motorized slider lets you capture twice the footage with more variety than a simple tripod. And if you are shooting in 4K, you can still crop the motion-controlled movement and make it look like you have two moving cameras.Precise MovementHow many times have you been carefully moving the slider while panning the fluid head and you move too quickly or jerk the motion? That’s never going to happen with a motorized slider. While setting up a motorized slider may add an extra five to ten minutes to your setup, you’ll actually save time by avoiding wasted movements and reshoots.A basic motorized slider will simply move your camera from point A to point B, but you can buy sliders and accessories that also pan and tilt the camera for you. Depending on the slider, you can preprogram these movements and adjust them with a control panel or a smart phone app.
